This morning I decided it was time to sort through the vintage hankie collection in preparation for making bunting. I was amazed by the detail and amount of work that went into these long abandoned top-pocket companions.

They have all been freshly laundered and pressed, now you can really see the detail on them

They range in 'age' from Edwardian to the 1970sone of them is embroidered to mark the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977.

It just made me think, how sad that we have replaced these lovely things with disposable paper in a plastic wrapper. Yes I suppose they are more 'hygenic' and convenientplus you wouldn't use one of these lovely hankies for blotting your lippy or wiping a mascara wand.It seems to me in an age of throwaway convenience culture, is there not room for both?

I have been inadvertently collecting these for just over a year and had always intended to use them for making vintage hankie bunting.stunning draped around a wedding marquee. However having gone through them all, I will be keeping back a couple of special ones to preserve and treasure. After all every proper lady should have a handkerchief in her handbag darling!
